What is Medicare?

Medicare is a national health insurance program that is administered by the U.S. government and is designed to provide health coverage for people who are 65 or older, people with certain disabilities, and people with ALS and end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Medicare Part A

  • Medicare Part A provides hospital insurance, and covers inpatient care in hospitals, hospice care, skilled nursing facility care, and home health care.

  • However, there may be some out-of-pocket costs for hospital stays such as deductibles and copayments.

  • It is generally provided at no cost to the beneficiary, if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.

Medicare Part B

  • Medicare Part B provides medical insurance, and covers doctor services, preventive services, and other medical items such as diagnostic tests and lab services.

  • You will pay an annual deductible, then 20% of the Medicare approved amount for most services.
